James Thomas correspondence, 1859, 1861-1864.

The series consists of correspondence of James Thomas from 1859-1864. The letters discuss Thomas' law practice, sale of slaves, farming during the Civil War, slave insurrections, administration of the Confederate government, substitutions for military service, prices of commodities, and Sherman's march through Georgia. Of particular interest is a letter (September 6, 1861) to Thomas from Thomas H. Latimer with the 15th Georgia Infantry Regiment describing the Battle at Munson's Hill (Va.). The series also contains a group of letters (1863-1864) from George W. Warthen of the 28th Georgia Infantry Regiment describing a skirmish on Morris Island (S.C.), life in the army, his wounds, and his stay in the hospital. Other correspondents include Alexander H. Stephens and James B. Ransom.
